20 men steal computers, other gear from Cotabato school
COTABATO CITY, Philippines -- About 20 masked men, one of them armed with an M-16 rifle, ransacked a state-owned school Saturday night and made off with computers and other electronic equipment worth about P500,000.
An irked Mayor Muslimin Sema has given newly installed city police director Senior Superintendent Willie Dangane a week's time to solve the case.
"I want the suspects by weekend," Sema said, adding that, "They should be thought a lesson because what they did was a grave crime, depriving school children ofcomputer education."
Dangane said he has already mobilized his men and coordinated with other law enforcement agencies in Central Mindanao and parts of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindnaao.
"In due time, we will know who these perpetrators are because the long arm of the law will definitely catch them," Dangane said.
Tong Amino, principal of J. Marquez High School in Barangay (village) Poblacion Mother, said eight computer units, two electric stand fans, a 21-inch TV set, and other electronic equipment inside the school's computer laboratory room were carted away by the robbers who struck at around 11:30 p.m.
A school guard, who was on duty, told the school principal his life had been threatened by the man armed with the rifle, who aimed the weapon at him while his companions cleared the room.
The suspects, according to the guard, hauled their loot into a waiting vehicle parked at a dark portion of the street and sped off.
"This could be a big-time syndicate of robbers because they operate systematically and [are] fully equipped," Sema said.
Amino said the school administration will be forced to temporarily suspend computer education classes until the stolen equipment is recovered or replaced.
