Armed Men Charged With Burglarizing Miami Students
Police search for a suspect wanted for breaking into Miami Students' homes armed with knives.
Officers say two men broke into 16 East Walnut Street and 21 West Vine Street early Thursday morning, stealing computers and injuring students.
Broken glass was still on the lawn of 21 West Vine Thursday evening, and blood was still on the porch from a scuffle with knife-weilding burglars.
Miami University student Joe Buehler and his three roommates came home from a bar around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. They found the front door wide open, and two men in black creeping around their house.
"We had left our door unlocked," said Joe Buehler. "And our driver's like, 'There's two guys in the house. What's going on?'"
The thieves stole beer, were about to lift Buehler's laptop and stole one roommate's iPod.
But, things went from bad to worse when the students got into a scuffle with one of the suspects. According to police, Greg Robinson, 25, pulled a knife.
"My roommate got cut across the lip. I mean he hit me in the nose and I have a gash right here. Inside, I actually found out he had slit my shirt, so I guess I was pretty close to getting cut."
Earlier that evening, police say Robinson and Darrell Gabbard, 28, broke into another Miami student's home and stole a laptop at 16 East Walnut.
Police got a good lead on one of the suspects from workers at Buffalo Wild Wings. A manager told officers two men dressed in dark clothing ate there earlier and he knew the name and address of one of the suspects.
Officers later arrested Robinson and he pointed out Gabbard as his accomplice. Police hadn't caught Gabbard as of late Thursday night. They think after burglarizing Miami students, Gabbard then broke into a unit at the Parkview Arms Apartments in Oxford.
"All of these residents that were burglarized," said Sergeant Jim Squance, Oxford Police Department. "The perpetrators came through an unlocked front door."
Officers are warning all residents to make sure they secure their homes.
Officers consider Gabbard dangerous and are asking anyone who may see him not to approach him. Anyone with information about Gabbard's whereabouts should call CrimeStoppers at (513) 352- 3040. You don't have to give your name.
