UTAH COMPUTER THIEF CAUGHT ON SURVEILLANCE CAMERA Computer store robbery caught by surveillance camera - ABC4.com

Computer store robbery caught by surveillance camera

(ABC 4 News)

MIDVALE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - With weeks before Christmas, several robbers got their hands on thousands of dollars worth of computer and music equipment. Just before four o’clock Wednesday morning, the "Simply Mac" store at 1380 Fort Union Boulevard was broken into.

Employees at the store spent the morning assessing their inventory, hoping what was damaged and stolen weren’t too bad. Tech Manager Dan Brimley says, “To work hard to have a business going and people like this just try and ruin it for you, it's just crazy.”

Surveillance video shows only one robber. We see him casing the front of the store. Minutes later he makes his move shattering the front door with a rock of some kind. He then contemplates the inside metal gate before figuring out how to get in. Brimley says, “I think he probably knew what we had in the store and what was in what location and grabbed what he wanted and took off.”

Store managers say all signs lead to a pre-holiday break in with roughly 100,000 dollars of merchandise stolen. Joel Rackham says, “We're prepping for the holidays and these types of people know I'm sure what you do in retail to bulk up for the holidays.” He continues, “We were pretty happy really that they only got away with two computers until we went into the back room.” It was a hole in the wall that had been kicked in that the other (assumed) robbers climbed through into the stock room and where almost 50 computers were taken.

Police were able to get some fingerprints from the robber in the front of the store, but there are little leads for who the others may be. Based on the surveillance video, police are looking for a man possibly in his twenties, slim build, last seen wearing a dark colored hoodie and white backpack.

“Simply Mac” has another store in Orem that has also been burglarized in the past. Due to this latest break in, the company says they will hire security guards to watch all of their store locations 24/7 through the holidays. They'll also amp up their surveillance equipment.
