Thieves broke into the Manitoba Justice Department twice in the past two months, stealing seven laptop computers and two BlackBerries that contain confidential information, CBC News has learned. The thefts at the prosecution and corrections offices in the Woodsworth Building in Winnipeg happened in October and November, after staff went home for the day.
Assistant deputy attorney general Don Slough said he believes the thieves were after the equipment, and not the data it contained. He did not provide details about that information, but acknowledged some of it was sensitive.
"Most of the information on the network is not accessible, there are passwords," he said. "We've got IT people who are doing everything to protect our information."
He said anyone directly connected to the information was informed of the thefts.
Winnipeg police are investigating, and in the meantime the justice office has taken extra measures to increase security.
"I won't go into specifics, but we know how the break-in occurred," Slough said."We've taken a number of steps to make the offices of the prosecutors more secure."
