Thieves escape School 14 after tripping alarm
PATERSON -- Police believe the thieves who broke into School 14 early Friday are the same thieves who on Monday burglarized School 27 and stole a pair of computers.
The thieves escaped Friday, but they did not manage to steal anything in the 5 a.m. heist, said James Smith, executive director of Paterson's school district security.
Police were alerted to the break-in when an alarm tripped at the elementary school at 522 Union Ave., Detective Lt. Don Giaquinto said.
A Board of Education security guard arrived soon after, only to see one of the thieves jump out of a second-floor window and run off. Authorities believe there is a second thief.
Investigators searched the school and found several computers, monitors and keyboards lined up and ready to be taken, police said. Smith said the district and police are now ramping up efforts to capture the burglars.
"We're going to put an end to this very shortly," he said.
