Bandar Seri Begawan - Police believe they have solved several theft cases following the arrests of 17 people and recovery of stolen items worth around $20,000 over the past two months.
If Commanding Officer of Brunei Police District, Snr Supt Pg Haji Rakit bin Pg Hj Osman, at a press conference held yesterday at Central Police Station, said the people arrested included 13 locals, including two women, as well as foreigners. The cases were solved from October to November this year.
The stolen items included four pots of I flowers known as "Gelombang Cinta", nine mountain bikes, 11 tins of baby milk powder (Enfalac A+) and computer notebooks. Police also recovered electric cables, handphones, a guitar, DVD, TV, organ, electrical goods, five car batteries, seven women headscarves, telephone recharge cards, six computers and a fax machine.
Snr Supt Pg Hj Rakit said that those arrested either did not have permanent jobs or were unemployed. They are aged between 18 and 45 years old.
Police investigations found that the stolen items were sold to third parties and that the crimes were committed at night. Some of those arrested have criminal records.
Police reminded the public to inform the police of any suspicious persons trying to sell any items. Public are also advised not to buy any suspicious goods, which are cheap and could be stolen.
Snr Supt Pg Haji Rakit said those who owned stolen items could be fined, imprisoned or both.

He said a foreign man was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for stealing four pots of "Gelombang Cinta".
A local man was arrested over the theft of nine mountain bikes of various brands. The man was brought to court and is under remand to facilitate police investigations.
In another case, a local man was sentenced to six months in jail for sealing 11 tins of baby milk powder, which the police believed were stolen from supermarkets in the capital. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
