The man told Officer James Keenan he is in charge of setting up new stores and had arrived at the store about 7 a.m. and put his wheeled business tote behind a small cubby where the cash registers will be set up.
A short time later, the man told police he noticed the tote was gone and all that remained were the wet spots from the wheels.
The tote contained an IBM laptop computer, paperwork including business receipts, and the keys to his private vehicle which is back in North Carolina, police said.
Police said the store is not open and the only suspects are the 150 people helping set up the store.
The building was locked at the time but access was open to anyone inside, and anyone could unlock the doors and leave the building, police said.
The man told police he gathered the employees together and pleaded for the return of the tote with no question asked, but that it had not been returned.
The theft was reported at 8:54 a.m. Thursday, police said.
