Councilman Upset With Computer Threat

Personal Identification Information May Be Stolen

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A Metro councilman said he wants answers after thieves stole computers that possibly contained personal information and social security numbers of up to 300,000 registered voters in Davidson County.

Channel Four's Cara Kumari reported that the thieves broke into the Metro Election Commission Building by throwing a rock throw the window.

Councilman Michael Craddock said this should have never happened.

He said the city needs to investigate, and if necessary, make changes to how the Metro government protects its city's residents' personal information.

"All of the council is getting e-mails about this, and people are outraged by this,"

Craddock said.Craddock said he has a lot of questions he wants answered about how this could have happened.

"We have to find out why this happened. Does the building have security? Were the computers encrypted? If not, why not? And we have to make sure, beyond any doubt, that this never happens again," Craddock said.

That is why he and the Metro Council Public Safety Committee are holding a meeting Thursday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. with some of those involved with protecting this information.

"We need to take a comprehensive look at how we handle this kind of information on people," Craddock said.

The hope is to get answers and come up with solutions.

The main goal is to make sure personal information never again falls into the wrong hands on their watch.

"There's just absolutely no reason for this to have happened. This government needs to look after this kind of information," Craddock said.

The Election Commission will send out a letter to every Davidson County voter about the possible risks to their identity, and consumer agencies are encouraging everyone to keep an eye on their credit report and look for anything suspicious.
