MACHIAS - A Jonesboro man who committed new crimes only weeks after he was released from an 18-month prison term for burglarizing several homes in 2004 was sentenced to return to prison for more than six years.
Jonathan C. Baldwin, 28, pleaded guilty Monday to new charges of burglary and theft in Washington County Superior Court, but it was his probation violation that carried more weight.
First Assistant District Attorney Paul Cavanaugh said Justice Kevin Cuddy sentenced Baldwin to 18 months in prison on the new charges but took particular exception to the probation violation. Once Baldwin finishes the 18-month sentence, he will return to prison for four years nine months, the remainder of his initial probation period.
"[Justice Cuddy] was clearly not impressed that he committed new crimes, specifically burglaries, as a way to support his drug habits," Cavanaugh said.
In March 2005, Baldwin pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in prison for committing 10 burglaries during a two-week spree in June 2004 in several communities in Hancock and Washington counties. Among the items stolen were guns, antiques and a sewing machine.
Baldwin told Justice Jeffrey Hjelm at the time that he committed the crimes to support an out-of-control drug habit.
Baldwin served his 18 months and was released from prison in late 2006, Cavanaugh said.
Shortly after that release, Baldwin violated his probation when police caught him in possession of drugs in Hancock County. He again went before a judge, who sentenced him to return to prison for another year.
Baldwin was released in late 2007, and a short time later police arrested him on suspicion that he burglarized another home in Steuben, according to Cavanaugh. The man reportedly stole laptop computers, which later were recovered.
Baldwin had no criminal history before his initial crime spree in 2004.
