Bank details ‘safe’ after laptop theft
Sep 8 2008 by Gerry Holt, Western Mail
A LAPTOP containing the personal details of 100 bank customers has been stolen from a South Wales branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland.
The bank confirmed the computer was stolen in Newport in May but said the customers had not been informed of the theft because the details held on the laptop were encrypted.
Police said the theft of the laptop, which contained names, addresses, dates of births, and possibly bank account details, happened in Commercial Street.
A spokesman for RBS said: “A laptop was snatched by thieves from a financial planning manager as she was working in the branch in May of this year. Using considerable force, the laptop, which was logged off at the time, was pulled away from its binding to the desk by the thieves who fled from the branch. We are confident that no customer confidential information is at risk following this theft, as the laptop was fully encrypted and so any data would not be accessible."
