Staff Report
Someone broke into Mae Eanes Middle School in Mobile on Monday during Hurricane Gustav and stole about $15,000 worth of computer equipment, officials said Tuesday.
Computers, video cameras and other technology used in the school's distance-learning lab was taken, said Mobile County Public School System spokeswoman Nancy Pierce.
Mae Eanes students use that equipment to take classes offered at other campuses.
"It's sad to think that someone would take advantage of us not being in school and the weather being so bad that we would lose some very important educational equipment that we use all the time," Pierce said.
Schools were closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday and again Tuesday because of the storm.
Mae Eanes is a 500-student school located in Mobile's Maysville community.
The Mobile Police Department is investigating the matter.
