Laptop with personal alumni data stolen from Pitt
PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh says a laptop computer containing the personal information of its business school graduates was stolen last month.
The information included the names and Social Security numbers of alumni of the College of Business Administration.
University officials say the computer was being used by an employee to conduct surveys of alumni when it was stolen Aug. 11 from the campus. Officials wouldn't say how many graduates were affected, but said on Tuesday that graduates have been notified.
University spokesman Robert Hill says the employee violated school policy regarding the storage of sensitive data.
Hill says there is no indication the thief knew the data was on the laptop or that someone has tried to use the information.
University and city police are investigating.
