Burglars broke into a Yuma school and stole computers over the weekend, according to the Yuma Police Department.
An investigation disclosed that sometime between Sunday at 9 p.m. and today at 5:30 a.m. suspects entered classrooms and stole several Dell laptop computers at Centennial Middle School, 2650 West 20th Street, a YPD news release said.
Recently, burglaries occurred at two other Yuma schools. During the weekend of Aug. 23 to 24, thieves stole $35,000 worth of Dell laptop computers in a burglary of Yuma Catholic High School. Police later arrested Frank Reyes III, 41, and Gene Seaman, 35, as suspects and recovered several computers, police said.
On July 19, Woodard Junior High School was heavily damaged during a burglary. A YPD officer at the scene estimated damage to be about $150,000. Damage included 35 to 40 computer systems, audio visual equipment, windows, carpets, walls and furnishings. Ernest Eugene Herrera, 20, was arrested in connection with the break-in and vandalism.
Yuma police spokesman Officer Clint Norred discounted that the break-ins represent a new trend. Every year a couple of schools are burglarized, he said. Sometimes it is students at a particular school or students of a rival school who may target a school for vandalism.
It is common knowledge that schools have certain electronic equipment, he said, and the value of that equipment makes them a target for thieves, he explained.
Police are still gathering information from the Centennial burglary, Norred said. The YPD encourages anybody with information about the case to telephone Detective John Sinz at 373-4670 or, to remain anonymous, call 78-CRIME.
