Police warn laptop users to beware at the office
DENVER - Your office may be the target of thieves looking for laptop computers.
Denver Police say a rash of laptop thefts - 39 since January - have been reported at downtown area businesses. Many of the thefts are at offices along the 16th Street Mall.
In many cases, police say thieves are believed to have wandered around office buildings looking for laptops left unattended and unsecured on desks.
Police are concerned both about the thefts, and the potential for identity
Police don't have any specific information about any sensitive information that may have been stolen, saying that would be up to the individual businesses to inform anyone whose information may have been compromised.
Police recommend the following:
Secure your laptop when you're away from your desk, or place it out of sight.
Record the serial number of your laptop.
Be mindful of people who may not belong in your office, and contact security if you feel they have no business there. You may also call the police non-emergency line at 720-913-2000.
Do not attempt to hold or restrain anyone yourself. Get the best description possible: race, gender, age, eye color, facial hair, hair color, height, weight, clothing, scars/tattoos and direction of travel if possible.
If you have information concerning the theft of laptop computers call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
