PHILADELPHIA - Thieves stole dozens of laptops from Furness High School, shortly after the group left to participate in a charity run.
Fox 29 has learned the burglary may be linked to several other recent Philadelphia high school break-ins.
It's certainly something Philadelphia police detectives, as well as school district police, are looking at now that they have some pretty good surveillance video from Sunday's laptop robbery, reported Joyce Evans.
Two woman are behind bars and police are looking for at least three more.
"They are fully equipped for the children to explore and discover,” says Sgt. Cynthia Cuerton of Philadelphia Police.
And they are gone! 40 more were snatched from inside Furness High School, while volunteers gathered to participate in the Dash for Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness.
"This one really disturbs me,” says Sgt. Cuerton. "We're looking at some of the cleaning people. We're looking at everybody."
That includes other laptop heists happening this school year.
Strawberry Mansion was hit for 33, Overbrook lost 12, Edward Bok was pinched for 30 laptops and the total now for Furness High, after three robberies, 104 laptop computers stolen from classrooms.
“A heartless person, a heartless person. A person that does not care about a child,” says Sgt. Cuerton.
"That's what's so appalling about this. Resources are limited. We live obviously in an age of technology so this is the kind of equipment, it’s no longer a luxury,” says James Golden of School District Security.
Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have bought a stolen computer - clearly marked school property - to have a heart.
"Give it to somebody. Tell them to bring it in, they don't know anything. We want the computers back,” says Sgt. Cuerton.
So far, none of those stolen laptops have been recovered.
They are worth hundreds of thousands. Detectives believe they are being sold on the street for $50 to $200 a piece.
Police say cleaning contractors are cooperating.
No word yet on whether so many computers can be replaced.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Philadelphia Police South Detective Division at 215-686-3013 or 3014.
