Philly school hit by crime on tragic day
Sunday, April 19, 2009 | 6:29 PM

A Philadelphia school is dealing with a pair of difficult events this weekend. After a break-in at the school that saw thousands in computer equipment stolen, a student collapsed and died after a charity event.

About 60 students and 20 staff members of Furness High School left the school at about 9:30 a.m. for the 14th Annual Donor Awareness Run/Walk In Fairmount Park.

At about 10 a.m. members of the custodial staff at the school spotted someone leaving the building with a computer. Workers reported the incident to police and investigators found about 40 laptop computers were stolen from the school.

Then, at about 11 a.m., a 19-year-old senior collapsed at the finish line of the charity run/walk. Medics transported him to Hahnemann hospital where he died.

School district officials say by all accounts this student was fine this morning when he boarded the bus and fine when he started the race.

Counselors for students and staff will be at Furness High School Monday, and a letter explaining what happened will be sent out, according to officials.
