Police investigate theft at teachers’ union

President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colwyn King, has reportedly been implicated in a theft at the GTU office located in Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.
Kaieteur News was told that on Sunday last, the monitor of a desktop computer was discovered missing from the office. It was noted that the computer was only bought a few months ago.
A source from within the GTU told this newspaper that it is widely suspected that the monitor was stolen by the GTU president.
However, when this newspaper contacted Mr. King and informed him of the allegations leveled against him, he transferred the questions to Field Secretary of the GTU, Lancelot Baptiste, who said that the allegations are far from the truth.
The source told Kaieteur News that at the General Council meeting, which was held on Tuesday, King was confronted by the members about their suspicion, and they asked him to either resign or replace the missing monitor.
However, Baptiste denied that this ever took place at the meeting.
A report has since been made to the Alberttown Police Station, and King, along with other members of the GTU, has since been questioned by the police in relation to thetheft.
It was explained that the caretaker, the treasurer and the GTU President are the ones who have keys to the building.
However, on Friday afternoon the caretaker, who is there only in the nights, was reportedly told by King to leave the door leading to the room with thecomputer open.
According to Baptiste, some work had to be done in the room over the weekend. He explained that the work was never done, and as such the door was left unlocked over the weekend.
The GTU Field Secretary said that the union has told the police that they must leave ‘no stone unturned’ in finding the thief at the office, but thus far no one has been accused.
This newspaper also understands that this is not the first time that things have gone missing from the GTU office.
Two other computers went missing some time last year.
