RHODE ISLAND COMPUTER THIEVES CHARGED Update: Father, son charged in Cumberland computer thefts - Projo 7 to 7 News Blog | Rhode Island news | The Providence Journal:
CUMBERLAND, R.I. -- Robert Legacy, Cumberland High School's director of information technology -- arrested with his son for the theft of 18 computers from the school -- "breached a trust," the town's school superintendent said Wednesday.
At a news conference late Wednesday morning, Supt. Donna A. Morelle and Police Chief John Desmarais said the investigation has led to the recovery of 18 school computers, and that the computers were turned over by school employees. Desmarais said the investigation is continuing, and he's asking others who may have school computers to come forward.
Legacy, 52, and his son, Kevin Legacy, 20, both of 63 Lincoln Park Ave., Cranston, were arrested on Monday in connection with the thefts. Kevin was charged with 30 counts of larceny over $500; and Robert was charged with 18 counts of receiving stolen goods, according to the police.
Both men were involved with the computers at the high school; Kevin Legacy helped his father install the computers.
"We believe the son stole them and the father sold them," Desmarais said.
Robert Legacy has been suspended without pay from his $86,500-a-year job with the schools, Moirelle said.
According to Desmarais, 30 computers were ordered for Cumberland High School in July, and delivered to the high school in August. This month, 15 of the computers were reported missing, which prompted a police investigation, Desmarais said. He said that there is a possibility that more computers were stolen. The police are continuing to investigate.
The Legacys were arraigned by a justice of the peace on Monday. Kevin Legacy was given surety bail of $5,000, which he posted. His next court date is June 23. Robert Legacy was released on $10,000 personal recognizance. He is due back in court June 23.
