VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Thieves climbed an 8-foot security fence to steal computers from a Red
David Fenton, the senior development director for the Red Cross, said the crime doesn't make much sense because all of the office electronics, including the stolen computers, were basically obsolete.
"We're a nonprofit. We don't have a lot of valuables here except for, I guess, office equipment," Fenton said. "But even that is aged compared to what's on the market now so it really didn't make a lot of sense to us."
The burglary occurred early Monday morning and the thieves set off an alarm at the office on Fourth Plain Boulevard. By the time police arrived, the burglars had escaped with two laptops and life-saving instructional materials.
Hundreds of people donate to the Red Cross each year, but Fenton said their personal information is safe. He said the stolen laptops do not have any sensitive information or files on them -- only projects that workers have been building for years.
The Red Cross does have insurance, but Fenton said the amount of damage and the cost of the stolen items don't add up to enough money for them to file a claim.
Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call Vancouver police.
