A burglar or burglars stole computer equipment from Pep Boys Automotive in the Red Rose Commons shopping center earlier this week, but company officials say no sensitive customer data was stored on the machines.
"Pep Boys understands the sensitivity of customer data," Alex Spooner, a company spokeswoman, said. "For that reason, we fully comply with information-security regulations and do not house proprietary customer data locally at our stores."
Lancaster city police said a burglar or burglars pried open a service door in the rear of the Fruitville Pike building between 6:30 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday.
An office was broken into and a safe cracked. Stolen were an undisclosed amount of cash and checks.
Also stolen was computer equipment, including hard drives, Todd Umstead, of the city police department, said.
"We're still working with Pep Boys security people to determine what exactly was on their computers," Umstead said.
Police said they could not provide an estimate of the value of the computers.
Workers at the local Pep Boys store referred all questions to their manager, who was off Thursday. Umstead said the manager reported the break-in andtheft Monday morning.
"We are conducting an ongoing internal investigation into the break-in that occurred at our Fruitville Pike location," the Pep Boys spokeswoman said.
