Staff and pupils at Kaitangata School are "devastated" someone broke in to their school on Friday night and stole half of their computers.

"We can't believe that people would break in using a crow bar and pinch our laptops - basically steal from children," principal Joyce Beck said.

" The children and staff are not happy. They're very disappointed."

Seven laptops were stolen, and it seemed likely more would have been taken if the alarms had not gone off at 10.45pm, scaring the thieves.

The computers had been much used by the school's 116 pupils, and the loss would be felt acutely, she said.

Senior Sergeant Richard Whitmore, of Balclutha, described the offence as "abhorrent".

The school had lost an essential learning tool, and would have to pay the excess on the insurance to replace the computers.

Anyone who saw any suspicious activity on Friday night or had any information about the laptops should contact the Balclutha police, he said.
