Tennessee BlueCross Blueshield says police investigating possible theft of 68 hard drives

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has discovered 68 computer hard drives missing from offices in suburban Chattanooga and a spokeswoman said state and federal authorities are investigating a possible theft.

BlueCross spokeswoman Mary Thompson said Tuesday that the 68 hard drives were discovered missing Monday at the health insurer's Eastgate offices.

Thompson said there was not any type of armed robbery. She said the insurer has been moving employees and equipment to its new state headquarters in downtown Chattanooga but it is likely the hard drives that store data 'have been burglarized or stolen.'

Thompson said she does not know if the missing parts possibly contain private information.

Chattanooga police spokeswoman Jerri Weary referred questions to Thompson.
