Pacific High closes after vandalism

From Staff Reports
Friday, October 09, 2009 | No comments posted.

Curry County sheriff’s deputies are asking for the public’s help in tracking down vandals who broke into Pacific High School in Langlois, stole computers and damaged the school. The school is offering a $1,600 reward for information leading to the conviction of the perpetrators.

The Port Orford-Langlois School District was forced to close the school Thursday morning, so police could investigate damage caused by the break-in Wednesday night. Staff sent students home at 9:30 a.m. at the urging of police and fire officials. Today was scheduled to be an in-service day for teachers, so students aren’t in school, but everything else has returned to normal.

“The site is completely safe. We are in the clean-up stage now,” said Mick Lane, the district’s superintendent.

Police aren’t saying much about what happened. They did say crimes included burglary, arson, vandalism and theft.

There was some smoke damage and water damage caused by the sprinkler system, but no structural damage, said Lane. There also was some damaged woodworking equipment, he said.

The school district is offering $1,000 cash and teachers and other employees have offered another $600 for information.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking citizens to be on the lookout for numerous Dell laptop computers that were taken from the high school.

Anyone with information about this case should contact Curry County Crimestoppers at (888) 974-0000, or the Curry County Sheriff’s Office (800) 543-8471. All calls to Crimestoppers are anonymous.
