Purdue West Lafayette had a computer lab broken into and computers stolen, PUC increased security in hopes of deterring and preventing thefts.
Purdue reported on Dec. 18 that there were several computers stolen from one of their computer labs over a period of several days. None of the perpetrators have been charged as of yet.
The Exponent, Purdue's student newspaper, reported the security cameras did not have usable footage of the thefts. Also, the labs were locked prior to the theft. Purdue estimates the loss at $80,000.
The theft in West Lafayette is not the first. In 2007, PUC had computers, along with furniture and other objects, stolen from several labs around campus. However, at that time, security was not increased.
Now, with the main campus having such a loss of property, PUC began taking a look at its own security measures to prevent the same thing from happening again.
The PUC University Police stepped up the monitoring and patrolling of areas that house high numbers of computers and other electronic equipment. This includes increasing lab inspections.
In the case of the Purdue theft, it appears the perpetrators used a van or truck parked outside the lab building. In light of that, the police will investigate all suspicious vehicles parked close to any of the campus buildings.
Any students and staff who see any unusual or suspicious vehicles, people or activity should report it immediately to PUC University Police. Assistance Vice Chancellor for Advancement Wes Lukoshus said students and staff should stay vigilant and observant of their campus surroundings.
Lukoshus stated the current staff has been advised to be more proactive in monitoring the campus. Also, the visibility of University Police has been increased to further create security for students, staff and equipment.
