Leo High School burglarized, vandalized
October 27, 2010
Burglars vandalized and stole computers at Leo Catholic High School on Sunday afternoon, police said.
During the break-in at the school at 7901 S. Sangamon, burglars left gang graffiti on the walls and vandalized 15 or 16 lockers, said the school's president, Dan McGrath.
A DVD player and 14 laptop computers were stolen, along with an empty cash register ripped from the cafeteria, McGrath said.
A teacher alerted to the noise found one of the burglars and "tried to grab the kid, who took off running," Chicago Police officer Mike Sullivan said.
Neighbors also saw youths running from the school, northbound on Sangamon, McGrath said.
The burglars broke a window to get into the school and wrote GDK on the walls, an apparent reference to "Gangster Disciple Killers," he added.
"It's very disappointing," McGrath said. "You feel violated when something like this happens. We really try to create a safe environment for the students here."
