(MEMPHIS 10/21/2010) -- 32-year-old Yaw Owusu is under arrest after authorities say they found 17 stolen Navy laptop computers in his home in the 14-hundred block of Tutwiler.
Joe Hunter, Owusu's brother, tells WREG News Channel 3, Owusu worked for the Navy as a civilian computer technician. Hunter says Owusu traveled as part of his job to places like New Orleans.
According to court papers, the stolen items found in Owusu's home were taken from secure military installations in Millington, TN., New Orleans, LA., and Mechanicsburg, PA.
The affidavit in the case says Owusu was working "in concert with Rodriguez McCain and that they were responsible for the theft of at least 50 US Navy laptops." McCain was not in the Shelby County Jail at last check. It's unclear whether authorities plan on making another arrest.
Investigators say further interviews revealed the number of stolen computers was actually closer to 150, with an estimated loss to the Navy of about $180,000.
Authorities say they found several laptop hard drives inside Owusu's home with labels indicating they belonged to military personnel.
Owusu is behind bars at the Shelby County Jail on $150,000 bond. He's scheduled to be in court Friday morning. His brother says he noticed the computers in the house, but he says Owusu didn't sell them, instead he says he would give them away to friends and strangers.
