Another Chase, Another Suspect Caught; York Nabs Suspected Computer Thief
By WYDaily StaffSaturday, November 20, 2010
A suspect in a computer store theft who eluded York County sheriff's deputies overnight has been caught.
York County sheriff's deputies were called to the 100 block of Link Road Friday morning around 10:15 on a report of a suspicious incident. Deputies searched the area and encountered David Gene Robinson, a 42-year-old Hampton man. A sheriff's spokesman said a brief foot pursuit ensued, with Robinson stealing a work van parked in the 800 block of Waterfowl Drive in the Lakes at Dare subdivision. He drove a couple of blocks before deputies stopped him in the 200 block of Link Road, then placed him under arrest at 10:30 a.m.
Deputies had been in that same area until midnight, looking for a second suspect in the theft of two computers Thursday afternoon from the Connecting Point Computer Center in the Heritage Square shopping center in the 4300 block of Route 17. Deputies had chased a car that matched the description of the getaway car, and the driver crashed the car into a ditch in the 1200 block of Dare Road before bailing out and taking off on foot.
A passenger, identified Friday as 41-year-old Antone Newton of the 700 block of Hemlock Street in Hampton, also fled the vehicle after it crashed but was apprehended immediately and taken into custody Thursday afternoon.
But deputies couldn't locate Robinson, even after securing a perimeter and bringing K9 units to assist in the search, which went until about midnight. Investigators believe Robinson spent the night outdoors or in garages near the Lakes at Dare neighborhood.
Both suspects are being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
Robinson has been charged with two counts of grand larceny, one count of evade and elude, one count of possession of cocaine, and two counts of destruction of property. Robinson also had a warrant out of Hampton for a probation violation.
Newton was charged with grand Larceny of computers from Connecting Point.
Sheriff Danny Diggs thanked citizens for their cooperation and assistance the ultimately successful effort to locate the suspect.
"It was with the determination of our deputies, and the alertness of our citizens that led to this capture,” Diggs said in a press release.
