An NHS Trust has suffered a significant data security breach after a laptop containing confidential patient records was stolen.
Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed that around 1,500 patient files may have been illegally accessed after the computer was taken from Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.
The Huddersfield Daily Examiner has reported that the computer was password protected and contained a range of details on patients including their name and date of birth.
Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the nature of the breach in an official statement.
"At the end of November it was found that part of an Electromyography (EMG) machine, a computer which drives it, had been taken from a locked office in the neurophysiology department at Calderdale Royal Hospital," it said.
"The police were immediately informed about the theft and we have also increased our security precautions in the department."
All those who have been affected have been notified.
