Police Come Up Cold In Tattoo Shop Burglaries
Owner Of Tattoo Shop Frustrated Over Police Investigation Into Burglary
POSTED: 8:44 pm MST January 6, 2011UPDATED: 9:23 am MST January 7, 2011
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Three-weeks after Raise the Bar Tattoo was robbed, tattoo artist are back at work. “Right now, I am working on a lot of prayers, “ said Brenda Warner, owner of Raise the Bar.
On Dec. 18, someone broke into the shop, stealing all the equipment, needles and ink. The criminals crawled through the roof to get inside. They disabled the security system, cut off the power and stole computers that grabbed images from cameras.
“When Inked Temptations was robbed in September, our guys lent them some equipment so they could keep going. And when they heard we got hit, Inked Temptation came forward with their equipment,” said Warner.
She said without their help, the shop would have closed in December.
Warner is frustrated with detectives at the Colorado Springs Police Department. A letter she got in the mail said the case has gone cold and without any more information police wouldn’t be able to pursue the case.
“It’s very discouraging. Our equipment has not been found; the guys are checking Craigslist and eBay looking for their equipment and it’s no where to be found,” said Warner.
What frustrates her the most she said is that police were able to get fingerprints from a cash drawer that was pried open and a foot print left on a seat when the criminals jumped down from the ceiling.
“A lot of these cases comes down to a lot of luck,” said CSPD Sgt Steve Noblitt.
He said police are searching pawnshops and other locations to help solve the crime, but many times it comes down to witnesses or surveillance video.
He said the fingerprints from the cash drawer may provide a lead, but it takes months to process and if a homicide or a sexual assault case comes in, it take priority over the burglary.
“We have people that are specifically trained to do these types of analysis to make the identification,” said Noblitt.
Warner wants to warn other tattoo shops to be on the lookout.
