Burglaries on campus the past two weeks left Milton Hall and the New Mexico State University Journalism Department short on electronics, as two computers were stolen from their labs.
Milton Hall was burglarized for the second time since Feb. 8 over the weekend, though according to NMSU police reports Milton Hall has been the scene of multiple burglaries since spring 2010.
According to police reports, last spring several big screen televisions were also stolen from the Milton Hall front lobby.
Nancy Howell, an administrative assistant in the department of Journalism said she was the first to notice the computer was missing.
“[The thieves] just walked into one of the labs and took the computer,” Howell said.
According to Howell, the computer technical authorities were not able to track down the computer through the IP address because it was already off campus, increasing the difficulty of finding the computer.
“The crime had to have happened during the day while the labs were open,” Howell said.
According to the New Mexico State University Police Department, since the spring semester began, the NMSU campus has an average of one burglary or larceny a day and 30 burglaries and larcenies in the span of 32 days.
“It hurts the students because now things cannot be shown in rooms where the computers were stolen,” said Dr. Hwiman Chung, a Journalism professor.
Chung also said the recent burglary also hurts bugetary issues already faced by NMSU and the journalism department.
“This should not happen in academia,” Dr. Chung said.
