MOD computers laptops and USBs lost or stolen
Defence minister Andrew Robathan has confirmed 192 incidents of MoD computers, laptops and USB memory sticks being lost or stolen during 2010.

Responding to a question from MP Angus Robertson, Robathan gave a monthly breakdown of lost and stolen computers, laptops and USB memory devices.

Over the course of the year 12 computers were lost and nine were stolen. A total of 45 laptops were lost and 76 stolen and 47 USB memory devices were lost and 3 stolen.

A note explained that the figures did not include incidents currently under investigation.

Robathan said: "The Ministry of Defence takes any loss of information and associated media storage devices very seriously and has robust procedures in place to mitigate against such occurrences.

"New processes, instructions and technological aids are also being implemented to mitigate human errors and raise awareness of every individual in the department."

Figures released in a freedom of information request in the summer of 2010 revealed even greater losses in previous years. In July it was revealed that 340 laptops had been lost or stolen in the previous two years, as well as 593 CDs, DVDs and floppy disks, 215 USB memory sticks, 96 hard drives and 13 mobile phones. In total between June 2008 and June 2010 1,257 hi-tech items went missing, 983 were not encrypted.

After the results were revealed, Robertson told Publicservice.co.uk: "Of course, from time to time items are lost or stolen, but the scale of these losses is staggering and raises serious security questions at the highest level.

"We must have a Ministerial level review of how these assets and data are handled."
