Brazen computer thieves steal big

Kelli Downey | 2nd April 2011

THOUSANDS of dollars worth of computer equipment was stolen from Clinton State School by brazen thieves in a matter of minutes, police said.
The thieves are thought to have gained entry to the school’s new multipurpose hall last Sunday afternoon at 5.10pm and could have escaped with their haul in as little as 15 minutes.
Gladstone Police were alerted to the break-in by a security firm following the activation of an alarm on the school premises.
Gladstone Police Acting District Crime Prevention Co-ordinator Constable Marcus Hooper described the break and enter as brazen, considering it was during daylight hours.
Const Hooper urged anyone who may have noticed people or vehicles near the school during this time frame to contact police.
He said a forensic examination of the scene had been conducted and police investigations were continuing.
Clinton State School acting deputy principal Astred Binnerts confirmed computer equipment had been stolen but was unable to elaborate on the method of entry or other details.
However, she said a damaged security system had since been repaired.
“We are currently updating security through the school,” Ms Binnerts said.
“We urge the public to contact School Watch on 131 788 if they notice anything unusual around the school.”
Anyone with information in relation to the break and enter is urged to phone Gladstone Police on 4971 3222 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
