'Urgent' thefts probe, says Bercow
Speaker John Bercow has said he hoped a police investigation into thefts from Parliament would prove "profitable".
A computer and iPad were stolen last week from the Westminster office of Keith Vaz, chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee which examines the Government's handling of crime and terrorism.
The theft came just days before a major security operation as the Palace of Westminster prepares for the visit of US President Barack Obama.
Mr Vaz joked MPs should set up their own neighbourhood watch or ask President Obama to leave some of his 200 Secret Service bodyguards at the Palace of Westminster following his visit this week.
Raising a point of order, Mr Vaz added: "On a serious note, it is very bad practice in a building such as this, which has protection from the outside, that these thefts are ongoing and they are getting worse."
Mr Bercow offered his commiserations to MPs who had been victims of theft and told them: "It is an extremely serious matter.
"We do not discuss security on the floor of the House. However, it is incumbent upon me to make it clear the matter is being investigated, I hope comprehensively, and I can testify as a matter of urgency.
"When those investigations have been completed I hope they will prove to have been profitable."
The items were stolen last Thursday night from the Norman Shaw North building on the estate, where a number of MPs have their offices. The computer belonged to a researcher but the iPad was Mr Vaz's and was snatched while the Leicester East MP attended an awards ceremony in the House of Commons.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman last week said the force was "investigating a number of reports of stolen laptops from across the Parliamentary Estate".
