The Australian Institute of Company Directors has moved to warn its members and clients of a potential data breach, after a laptop was stolen from its office in Sydney.
The Institute said the data on the computer, possibly including names addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth was protected, but there was some risk of it being accessed and used for fraudulent purposes.
"We understand that the risk of its being accessed and used for fraudulent purposes is low and that its utility is minimal, as much of the information is publicly available,” AICD chief executive officer John Colvin, said.
“We felt it was important, however, to let our members and clients know what had happened.”
The Institute said the stolen computer did not contain data about credit card numbers, banking details, personal email addresses of members and clients or passwords.
Mr Colvin said police and forensic experts are investigating the theft and the organisation is reviewing its security. It has also consulted the Privacy Commissioner on the issue.
Members or clients who may have concerns are being encouraged to call the Institute on 1300 66 44 63.
