Old Mill loses dozens of laptops in burglary
Computers valued at $52,500
By Ryan White
Dozens of Apple laptops were stolen from Old Mill Elementary sometime during the early hours of July 20, according to Mill Valley police.
Forty-seven computers — 30 MacBooks and 17 iBooks — were stolen, according to Tim Ryan, district director of maintenance and operations. Ryan put the value of the stolen computers at $52,500.
It appeared the thieves cut the lock on the construction fence before prying open a window leading into the school’s multipurpose room, said Mill Valley police Sgt. Paul Wrapp. Once inside, the burglars located the locked safe storing the laptops, dismantled the lock and made off with the dozens of computers inside.
“They probably entered through the construction area and then made their way out through the same area,” Wrapp said.
Old Mill is undergoing $2.5 million in improvements this summer. The modernization work, overseen by Van Pelt Construction Services, is funded by a $59.8 million bond approved by voters in November 2009.
A construction employee discovered the burglary July 20 and reported it to police. Wrapp said it appeared the school was targeted sometime between midnight and 5 a.m.
“It’s part of doing business in a public entity,” said Ryan, referring to the thefts. “It’s a sad part, but it’s part of doing business.”
District officials don’t yet know if a portion of the loss will be covered by its insurance providers.
Meanwhile, Ryan said the district is taking steps to prevent another such loss. “We have increased security,” he said.
Mill Valley police are asking anyone with information or who observed suspicious activity during the early hours of July 20 to contact Sgt. Paul Wrapp at 389-4100, ext. 119. Callers can also use the department’s anonymous tip line at 721-4547.
