Kenya: Ten Eldoret Council Computers Stolen

POLICE in Eldoret are investigating the theft of more than 10 computers from the Eldoret Municipal Council. The computers were stolen from the Education and Social Services department two days ago but no doors were broken at the rooms where the computers had been installed.
Some employees of the council have already been quizzed over the theft which was described as an inside job because the doors to the rooms were opened and closed after the theft. "This must be an inside job because outsiders cannot gain entry into the council which is guarded round the clock by armed security personnel and council askaris," said councillor Elizabeth Kibii who is chairperson of the Education and Social Services Committee.
She said the computers had been bought by the civic body for computerization of the department and that the theft would affect the plans to upgrade information and technology systems within the education department. Kibii said investigations into the theft were going on but all indications are that some employees may have been involved in the robbery. She however said the computers were still new and did not have crucial information. "Luckily the computers had just been installed and did not thus contain important information," said Kibii.
Mayor William Rono and Town Clerk Stanslus Ondiumu could not be reached for comment as their phones went unanswered. The education and social services department is located on the second floor of the town hall. Early this year the council used more than Sh2 million to erect a permanent perimeter fence around the town hall where the gates are secured by security personnel.
No other offices were broken into and the thieves appear to have been targeting the new computers. The council has computerized most of its services but members of the public still complain of slow services at the civic body. Kibii said those responsible for the theft must be brought to book because it was unacceptable for the council to lose public funds on items which are stolen through carelessness by officers at the council.
Meanwhile heavy rains have damaged roads in parts of the town causing serious traffic jams within the Central Business District (CBD). Residents want the council and the ministry of roads to help repair the roads in order to reduce the traffic jam. Last week mayor Rono said the roads could only be repaired after the rains subsides.
