Vacaville library computer theft leads to arrest

PUBLISHED BY THE REPORTER

Vacaville Public Library staff have been on guard lately because of a recent string of thefts at the Ulatis Cultural Center branch.

It paid off Thursday, police said, when one suspect was caught in the act of trying to steal a laptop from a customer.

Vacaville Police Sgt. Charlie Spruill said Drake Jones, 21, was arrested and booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of possessing stolen goods as well as suspicion of public intoxication and an outstanding warrant in Sacramento.

Vacaville transient Zachary Moore, 22, also was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and booked into county jail.

Solano County Library Deputy Director of Public Services Peggy Yost explained that a customer reported their laptop was stolen and wanted to file a police report.

Yost said she was told an individual was acting suspicious and actually returned to the library while the police where there.

She said they are unsure if either of the two suspects are connected to previous thefts. Spruill said he wasn't told of prior incidents at the library.

Still, Yost explained that staff has been "super vigilant" watching suspicious activity and encouraging those to come forward to file a police report. The library has even posted signs reminding customers to watch their belongings and that they aren't necessarily safe if they leave them on a table just to go to the bathroom.
