Police Launch Investigation After 21 Computers Stolen From East Harlem School

By: Rebecca Spitz
An East Harlem school was robbed of nearly $27,000 worth of technology over the weekend, and parents said Monday that were struggling to explain the situation to their children despite an ongoing police investigation. NY1’s Rebecca Spitz filed the following report.
Police walking out of the building isn’t exactly what kids want to see when they get to school first thing Monday morning.
That’s what happened at Central Park East II, however. Investigators were there because someone made off with close to $27,000 in computers and equipment over the long holiday weekend.
"It seems like somebody did it, somebody who knows about the school," said Meseret Gebru, a parent.
Parents say Central Park East II was broken into three years ago, but police aren't connecting the incidents.
This time, Department of Education officials confirmed that seven rooms were hit, burglars escaping with 12 Apple Macbooks, nine Lenovo laptops, two camcorders and a projector.
"My initial reaction was disappointment. It took so many years for us to get the funding to get these computers. It wasn't anything easy, and of course I felt bad for the children, the students as well," said Yhane Smith, PTA president.
There are about 220 students in the school, from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade.

Parents say the computers were an integral part of their learning experience. Many said they only learned about the burglary when they picked their kids up from school, and now they're wondering just how to explain it to them.
"It means so much to our children that we're able to help them and fundraise as much as we can to get some things like this into our school, and to have it be gone in a blink of an eye and in a way that they can hardly understand," said Karen Kaapcke, a parent.
Police officials said a formal complaint has been filed and that police are conducting an investigation into the burglary and the property that was stolen.
