Thieves steal 8 computers from Uasin Gishu hospital

Thieves raided the Uasin Gishu District Hospital and stole eight computers containing crucial data belonging to the hospital. The machines were stolen from different offices including that of the Eldoret East Medical Officer of Health Daniel Wainaina. Four workers at the hospital, a watchman and secretaries, were arrested for interrogation.
A watchman who was on duty reported that some people drove into the hospital and took away the computers saying they had been sent by senior officers. Wainaina and the hospital administrator could not be reached for comment but Eldoret police chief Erastus Muthamia said that they were investigating. The hospital is in the middle of Eldoret town next to the High Court and the Administration Police lines.
Recently two new motorcycles for field work were stolen from the hospital just two days after they were delivered from Nairobi. Also stolen were bags of sugar, flour, green grams and rice which had also just been delivered. A patient told the Star that he saw staff at the hospital sharing out the food.
Workers accuse the administration of poor management. The hospital has more than 30 nurses and 10 clinical officers among other staff but in most cases does not offer service at night. Some workers say the theft and other malpractices are an inside job intended to undermine the MOH. They also claim claim that money given by the government for different services is misused by the senior officers.
