Staffers of the National Sports Commission (NSC) resumed work on Wednesday 4th April, 2012 to discover that the office of the Director-General of the Commission, Dr. Patrick Ekeji has been burgled by yet to be identified persons.
Items stolen from the office of the Director-General which is situated on the first floor of the Federal Secretariat complex Maitama, Abuja are: his personal computer, the Secretary’s personal computer, the office Desktop and a CPU.
Although, the motive for the theft is yet to be ascertained, there are suspicions that the burglary may not be unconnected with attempts by the perpetrators to smear the reputation of the NSC with a view to destroying the public confidence in the establishment.
Speaking on the incident, the Director Human Resources Management and Finance, Mustapha Mohammed stated that the perpetrators were out to tarnish the image of the Commission, having tried several methods in the past including parading false documents and going public with them, spreading rumour and distorting facts to present an untrue picture of the Commission.
He went further to say that they have now adopted a new method of burglary and removing computer gadgets such as Laptops; Desktop and CPUs in a continued effort to obtain information with which they hope to destroy the NSC’s image. He said such an act will be futile as the NSC administration is open to public scrutiny at all times even as it has nothing to hide.
On his part, Deputy Director Accounts, Tokunbo Balogun expressed dismay at the incident; he said that given the security situation in the country in recent times, such an occurrence as burglary in a government institution should be a source of grave concern to the authorities, especially when it happens within precincts where security personnel are assigned.
