Investigation underway after computers stolen from UH Manoa offices
University of Hawaii professors are on edge after several break-ins at their offices. Computers were taken, raising concern about what was on them and whether their offices are vulnerable to more break-ins.
On the fourth floor of Moore Hall at the University of Hawaii, locks on the doors of several offices are being repaired after they were found by a janitor pried open Friday morning.
“All these computers were stolen, all the Mac equipment,” professor Didier Lenglare said.
Professor Lenglare says seven offices were hit — two Macbooks and four Mac computers were taken, frustrating professors. With only weeks to go until the end of the semester, students are also affected.
“It’s a little bit of extra stress, especially at this time of year,” UH student Becky Dodt said. “It’s really a shock to the whole community.”
But it’s not such a shock to Lenglare. He says this is the second time this building has been hit.
Last year, computers were stolen from offices right across the hall.
“The problem is that because of public finances, the resources are limited and more security would mean more expense, and less security means our computers disappear,” Lenglare said.
Last year, after several burglaries, Chancellor Tom Apple said that he was aware of infrastructure and security problems.
Earlier this week, after athletic director Ben Jay tweeted about the disrepair of campus facilities, Apple promised that change is on its way.
“I realize now that if you take it in the context of just the tweet itself you don’t get behind what the real meaning was — what the motivator was and it’s really the kind of thing we have to be better than this we have high expectations,” Jay said.
Honolulu Police say they have leads and are investigating, but no arrests have been made.
