City loses $41,000 in computer equipment in burglary

Someone stole about $41,000 worth of computer equipment from a city office building on the West Side in a burglary, police said today.
The theft, which was reported to police about noon today, took place at the city of Chicago building in the 1600 block of West Chicago Avenue, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala. Information on when the break-in might have taken place was not immediately available.
The theft, which apparently happened in a burglary, was from offices of the city’s Department of Family and Support Services, Zala said. Both new and used equipment was stolen, he said.
About $41,000 worth of equipment was stolen, said News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss.
Zala referred more detailed questions to a spokesman for Family and Support Services. The spokesman, however, referred questions to police.
"Because this matter is under investigation by Chicago Police, it would be inappropriate for us to comment on any of the details that could be a part of that investigation," department spokesman Matt Smith said in an email.
The city-owned office building , 1613-1635 W. Chicago Avenue, was built starting in 1921 by the Goldblatt Brothers as the first store in the department store chain. The building was bought by the city for about $3.5 million in 1997 and renovated starting the next year. In addition to Family and Support Services, it also houses the offices of the Independent Police Review Authority and a city senior center, among other city facilities.
