Burglars steal computers, personal info from Broad Ripple businesses

Indianapolis
Burglars not only stole thousands of dollars worth of computers from three Broad Ripple businesses, this weekend, they also made off with important records containing personal information.
It happened sometime Sunday night at an office building on the 6100 block of North College in Broad Ripple, according to the victims.
Sarah Reynolds, co-owner of ITEX Indiana said thieves broke through the back door of the building, walked into her office and stole her computer and camera.

"They came back here and took my office computer off of my desk," said Reynolds. "It's scary."
Then, she believes, they hit other businesses in the building, including EMSI, a business that performs drug screenings. It not only lost computers, but also important records with personal information.

Now, not only are the businesses looking into security systems, Reynolds is bringing a gun to work.
"At this point, I'm nearly terrified not to," she said. "What would've happened if I would've walked in on that? You know, that's terrifying for me."
She is among some Broad Ripple residents who are growing concerned that robberies in and around Broad Ripple may be on the rise. Most of the robberies are happening right off the main strip in the popular nightlife area.
"It's frightening. The thought of, you know, I not only have my office here but I also live in Broad Ripple," said Reynolds.

Fox59 was able to find at least nine police reports in just three weekends for robberies in the area.

Mayor Greg Ballard is aware of the issue.

"There are actions being taken in Broad Ripple," said Ballard. "There are discussions among different groups addressing that issue."

IMPD Police Chief Rick Hite is also in on those discussions.

"We're on top of that. We're looking at our crime strategies as it applies to that area," said Hite.

Niether the mayor nor the police chief would give specifics, but they said there is a plan already in place.

"We need to keep it a bit silent on what were going to do but you can rest assure that actions have been taken," said Ballard.
