Thieves target libraries across campus

S T O R Y - By Pamela Beauchamp, Staff Writer
Sam Leung, Sci ’06, is one of a number of students who have reported thefts at libraries in recent months. Sam Leung, Sci ’06, nearly had his laptop stolen while he took a break from studying on the second floor of Stauffer Library a few weeks ago.

“I was gone for about a minute, maybe two,” Leung said. He left the laptop, in its case, on a shelf above a desk. Leung said he went to a washroom less than 40 feet away from his computer.

When he returned to his seat, Leung said he saw a male with a laptop case similar to his own. He determined that the laptop was actually his own and began questioning the attempted thief.

The two proceeded downstairs to the circulation desk to report the theft. To his surprise, Leung said Campus Security was already in the building.

“[Campus Security] was on call because 15 minutes earlier, a girl had her book bag stolen,” Leung said.

The accused was not a Queen’s student and was charged by the Kingston Police with theft under $5,000.
