MICHIGAN COMPUTER HARD DRIVE THIEF CAUGHT Burglary suspect caught todayHARRISON -- Clare County sheriff's deputies say they may have nabbed the burglar who has stolen computer hard drives from at least four businesses.
Detective Lt. Mark McClellan said deputies responding to a burglar alarm caught a 19-year-old Harrison man inside Hardy Insurance Agency, 517 N. First in Harrison, about 4:15 a.m. today.
The intruder had broken a back door to get into the business, McClellan said. It was the same method a burglar used to get into the business April 12, when the culprit walked off with computer equipment containing customer information.
The agency is one of four businesses burglarized since Jan. 10, McClellan has said. The first break-in occurred at Tom's Pole Buildings, 4050 Industrial. On March 29, someone broke into the law offices of Austin R. Roe, 426 N. First. Someone broke into Mitchell & Associates, 426 N. First, on April 7.
In all of the burglaries, only computer hard drives were taken, said McClellan, who did not know why the culprit wanted the devices.
Computer crimes experts, however, say the thief likely was looking for Social Security numbers and other personal identification information to use to apply for credit.
