Computers containing eight years of confidential information about every cancer patient in Shropshire and Mid Wales have been stolen in a raid at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Health bosses today said the thefts had caused massive disruption to the pathology department, which has lost years of vital medical data, photos, e-mails and teaching materials.
They said the patient information dating back to 1996, stored on one of the stolen PCs, had not been lost for good as computer back-ups were made each day.
But they branded the thieves 'heartless' for targeting a department devoted to helping sick people.
And they are urging the public to inform police if anyone offers them computers for sale on the cheap.
Raiders broke into the hospital on Monday night, getting away with nine Dale computers and one laptop.
The computers, containing medical details of every cancer patient treated or seen at the hospital for eight years, were kept behind locked doors and camera footage is now being examined in a hunt for clues. "
