KENTUCKY COMPUTER STOLEN FROM COLLEGEWKYT 27 NEWSFIRST & WYMT Mountain News - Small College Campus Seeing Rise Of CrimeCrime is on the rise on the campus of one Kentucky college. In the past month, Asbury College has reported seven thefts.
This private school is not used to this kind of crime. All is usually pretty quiet at Asbury College.
Lisa Harper is the college's communications director. "We have a very small campus and we live in a small community. We know each other. We're all pretty much family here."
But the past month has produced a string of thefts, culminating in the theft of two laptops at Reasoner Hall.
James Donaldson is an Asbury student. "I couldn't believe it. This doesn't happen here. This didn't happen last year. No one on my hall locks their doors."
On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, students gather for chapel. That's when students suspect the thefts are taking place.
Student Joshua Stevenson, "Somebody's going to realize that it's an easy target, and it is."
James Donaldson's residence hall has been a target of the crimes."My R.A.'s roommate got his computer stolen. My brother had a thousand dollars worth of stuff stolen."
The university is responding with a new policy. For the first time, students must use their key cards to get into their dorms and it's taking a while for students to get used to it.
The university has also passed on some quick advice. They're telling students to simply lock their doors, something that may seem common sense to most, but is different in the small town culture that is the Asbury campus.
University officials say a little publicity should slow down the crimes and hope that for now all students have to worry about, is remembering to use their key cards to enter their dorms.
Asbury College security is working together with Wilmore police to investigate the crimes.
