A COMPUTER containing information on housing issues in Camden has been stolen by a thief who conned his way into a council building.

The man breached security at Bidborough House, in King's Cross, after the building was closed by telling cleaning staff he was a fire marshal and had to carry out urgent checks.

After he left it was discovered that a desktop computer, valued at £550 had been taken from the housing department.

Camden Council said: "The theft has had no effect on council services and the loss was minimal.

"The computer will be relatively unusable as the council uses high quality security systems on all computers and IT systems.

"The council's records are kept on central servers and drives and not on individual computers so there is no risk of the person accessing confidential information.

As a result of this incident we are reviewing our security arrangements and will carry out training with police to ensure our security and cleaning staff are more vigilant about false claims of identification."

Camden police are scanning CCTV footage from the building in a bid to catch the thief.
