OHIO COMPUTERS STOLEN FROM UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO CAUSING GRIEF FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE VICTIMS OF IDENTITY THEFT WTOL-TV Toledo, OH: UT Students Identities Stolen WEST TOLEDO -- There's troubling news for some students at the University of Toledo. Several of them are just now finding out that they are the victims of identity theft. The trouble started at Rocket Hall on the UT campus at the corner of Dorr and Secor.

University administrators say somebody ripped off several laptop computers from an office inside the building. Those computers were full of private information for several thousand students, and their names and Social security numbers could be in the hands of criminals right now.

UT students are now wondering who has those computers, and the information on them. "That's really scary, cause you don't know who it is, and we're all trying to figure it out. We're all pretty scared about it," said Raquel Rodriguez, a UT student.

The laptops disappeared over Thanksgiving break from an office inside Rocket Hall. Administrators says somebody locked the office door, but apparently didn't pull it all the way shut, so the crooks had easy access. "This is a case where somebody broke into an office, and essentially walked right out with the data under their arm," said Joe Sawasky, UT's Chief Information Officer.

Sawasky says the computers contained records for about 2,200 transfer and adult students at the school, including their social security numbers. The computers are protected by a password, but Sawasky says, "A very motivated and knowledgable person who has technical skills could gain access to it."

Those affected are being told to monitor their credit closely. Here are links to the major credit reporting agencies:
