OREGON ARREST MADE IN RECENT COMPUTER THEFT CASES The News-Review - News Douglas County sheriff’s detectives arrested three locals recently for their alleged participation in three burglaries that occurred in Roseburg and Drain in late December and early January.
The first burglary occurred at a residence on Northeast Stephens Street, where several guns, a guitar, sound equipment and money were taken, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Roseburg Police Department investigated another burglary that occurred Dec. 29 at Karen’s Coffee Cup on Diamond Lake Boulevard in which the business computer and a safe containing both personal and business documents were taken.
The next day, while investigating the Stephens Street burglary, sheriff’s detectives arrested 45-year-old James Leroy Carson of Roseburg. Two of the stolen guns and the sound equipment were recovered, and Carson was arrested on suspicion of first-degree theft by receiving.
On Jan. 3, another burglary occurred at the Gateway Shell Station on Cedar Street in Drain, according to the sheriff’s office. The business was ransacked and a substantial amount of property was taken, including bank bags, cigarettes, money and other miscellaneous items.
Two days later, sheriff’s detectives and parole and probation officers served a search warrant at 303 N.W. Grant St. in Sutherlin, seizing bank bags, bags of cigarettes and burglary tools connected to the Gateway Shell burglary. Additionally, documents taken during the Karen’s Coffee Cup burglary were recovered.
Robert D. Kapitain, 49, of Sutherlin was arrested Jan. 10, and police subsequently recovered the stolen guitar from the Stephens Street burglary and more documents from Karen’s Coffee Cup. Kapitain was arrested on suspicion of two counts of second-degree burglary for the burglary at the diner and the Drain gas station.
More property belonging to the diner was recovered last Friday, when sheriff’s detectives and probation officers teamed up with the Sutherlin Police Department to search a home at 2881 Nonpareil Road in Sutherlin. At this address, stolen computer equipment was seized, and Harry Louis Steven Vanpelt, 29, of Sutherlin was arrested on suspicion of two counts of second-degree burglary, first-degree theft by receiving and an outstanding felony warrant for burglary.
